Tulsa to Tucumcari - the short verson

For the long version - visit my Blog but I thought I'd share the best of the bird sightings with you guys :)

We set out Saturday 9/2. Because the hubby and I both have a dislike of Texas, Interstates, and toll roads - we planned a long, fairly leisurely cruise across the Oklahoma panhandle to New Mexico.

We saw our first Raven as he flew up from where he was eating roadkill. After him we saw several more, including a group of four perched in a line on a fence, waiting for the big Osprey to get done with yet another roadkill.

We noticed a Coopers Hawk just as he halted, sort of hovered a moment looking down, then froze, lowered his claws and dropped straight down on his dinner. Way cool!

I saw a pheasent, and James saw a family group of Roadrunners and in the evening, a Great Horned Owl on a telephone pole.

The next day, between Clayton, NM and Ute Lake State Park near Logan, NM we found a pair of Osprey sitting on fence posts next to each other. We stopped the car and got out, and they allowed us a nice long look before they decided we were disturbing and took off. Sadly, the photos didn't turn out. Need to get a camera - everyone send donations to paypal - LOL!

We also saw an entire flock of cattle egrets - with a herd of cattle, of course.

One of the more exciting things for us to see, as we headed to Ute Lake and then down here to Tucumcari, were Pronghorn Antelope casually grazing near the road. I have more and haven't begun to scratch the surface, but I've got to go. Got to grab the laundry and check out of the motel here in Tucumcari - so we can go camp a few more days in Santa Rosa Lake State Park - after driving a section of Route 66 between Tucumcari and Santa Rosa that is reportedly just seething with thousands of wildlife...

Good birding!
