Circus of the Spineless - and while we're on the subject - Fly catchers!

Circus of the Spineless #21 over at 10000 Birds is largely about how many animals eat various members of the invertebrate family.

The time seems auspicious, since the two new birds on my life list are Flycatchers :D.

Although all the guides seem to say these western flycatchers are very similar I had no problem telling these two apart - once I got a look at them both. The Dusky-capped Flycatcher came right up to the front door and looked boldly in the window. I think he must have heard from the toads that we have quite an insect deli going on from dusk to dawn due to our habit of leaving a light on outside.

The goats captured a Brown-crested Flycatcher in their pen the other day. Well, unintentionally, I did. I left the gate to the goats pen open and he must have flown inside after the insects cleaning up the goats mess. When I brought the goats back after a day out grazing, the Flycatcher himself was caught. This is the second one we "caught" by accident - the other had flown through the back sliding window in to my truck! I guess if they are chasing a fly they don't let anything stop them!

Well, we have plenty for them to eat on the ranch, so I'll look forward to seeing more of the flycatchers.

Good birding!
