Mistaken Identity and the ones that got awaySo I am tippy toeing around with my camera, slipping out the door and around the trailer...when the bird in question raised her head and turned to look at me. At which point I felt like a total idiot...she was a White Winged Dove, which we have quite a few of at the moment. She was just hunched down to stay warm in such a way that her silhouette looked like that of a raptor...or at least that is my excuse. I have a new cell phone that takes pictures. Finally, a camera in my pocket! I still have to figure out if I can somehow download them to the computer. If I can, I might even get to share that Western Meadowlark who drops by the share dinner with the horses and goats every night. That bird is a sharp one. She'll walk almost under my feet, paying no attention to me as I go about feeding. But let me stop and lift a camera and she's off! I have a lot of photos of whirring wings and a short tail... Something was hopping around the trees outside the kitchen window yesterday that I think was a Cactus Wren. I really wanted a photo, but of course, as soon as I got the camera the bird moved to another branch. I could just see the silhouette, but she was directly behind another branch. When she finally hopped down she slipped into some underbrush and showed off just how well that camoflage thing works. *sigh* The hubby headed for work this morning, then came back in for something he forgot and told me there was a Downy Woodpecker outside. Woodpeckers visit, but don't stay - we have too few trees here. I ran out, with the camera, but of course the bird was gone by then. So I guess the story this week is "the one that got away"! LOL.
