Carnival time!We have had a few here, too. They pass through the desert on their way to the mountains north of us, so seeing them is just a moment of luck. Never when I have the camera, of course. I did get a photo of a Cactus Wren, which I'll try and enhance a little to share tomorrow. I also saw my first Yellow-Eyed Junco. A Harrier hawk made a few evening passes over our pasture. Speaking of evenings, I spent a marvelous evening on the back porch recently watching some very tiny bats busily decimating the moth population. They were astoundingly swift and agile and I never got enough of a good look to identify them. I was also surprised at how small they were. I'm sure many of them had wingspans of less than 6 inches. At least a few, I think, were Mexican Free-Tailed Bats, as I could see their little tails trailing along behind them. I sat and watched them until full dark, and then I sat and watched the stars come out. This New Mexico sky never fails to delight my eyes. We seem to be having a very dry year, so the migrants don't stop for long. Jornada Lake has far less water than last year and we have had no rain and no snow on our high plateau. Still, Elephant Butte lake is not far away, not to mention the Rio Grande and Cuchillo Negro River. I think what I need to do is convince the hubby to take a small weekend trip up to the State Parks for some bird watching. Hmmmm... Meanwhile, updating and prettifying and link checking type things are planned for this blog TODAY - in time for my usual Friday personal blog fest. Check back - I hope we'll be looking much better.
