Battle of the Orioles

I've really been having some fantastic bird watching outside my window today. Why does anyone need TV?

A few weeks ago, a Bullocks Oriole moved into the yard, and persuaded me to hang an Oriole feeder. Okay, he insisted.

Male Bullocks Oriole

A couple of days ago, this very handsome fellow showed up.
Male Scotts OrioleHe is a Scott's Oriole - and was a lifetime first for me (whoohoo). So I was thrilled to death to see him. However, I did wonder how the Bullocks Oriole was going to feel about sharing "his" feeder.

As if this morning, the battle was on. The Scott's Oriole has decided this is HIS feeder. Every time the Bullocks comes in for a sip, the Scott's zooms in and runs him off. During the fray, a new bird showed up. Because she consistently stayed around the male Bullock's Oriole, I surmised she was probably the female. A quick dip into a bird guide proved me correct. She is very (forgive me) flighty but during one brief period of peace she and her mate got to have a nice drink at the feeder - and I got a (not very good) photo of them together:

Bullock's Oriole Pair

The battle has raged on and on since 8 am this morning. It is now 4:30 pm and they are still at it.

I haven't seen the female in a while, so I guess she either got her fill or gave up. The yucca are blooming, so she may have headed out after some natural food.

The Scott's Oriole was perched on the little table right next to my window a few minutes ago. He is looking a little the worse for wear. Or maybe he was just windblown (we are having a very windy day).

The Bullock's pair roost in that huge pine tree at night - I can tell by their song mixed in with the cacophony of others. They may even have a nest, although I'm not sure of that.

It will be interesting to see if they battle on, make peace, or someone moves out. There are plenty of yuccas in bloom right behind the house and a few thousand acres more of them behind that, so really there is no food shortage. What there is a shortage of here, is "real" trees. I don't know if the Scott's is mated. From his wing color I am thinking he may be an immature male (he isn't bright black on his wings, but sort of olive) so maybe if he's just baching it he'll move on, or make nice.

Either way, I'm sure enjoying the watching!
