Live8

1985 was a rather insane year for me, but I do remember the LiveAid concerts. Now, in 2005, we're getting a second chance to address this global issue and it is more important than ever. You can find out more about Live8 at the website

One thing they don't really mention that I'd like you to be aware of is that while the U.S. didn't exactly cut back on AIDs relief funds, what our lovely Pres. Bush did was require that the funds be used only to buy brand name AIDS drugs from his friends in the pharmacuetical industry. This, effectively, cut funding by 2/3 because the brand name drugs cost more. For the same drug.

In fact, AIDs workers have been concerned that it will also cut back on compliance by patients because the brand name drug has to be taken 3x a day, as opposed to the generic which is taken once a day. Now which do you suppose people are more likely to remember and do?

Really, I don't think there is much hope of the American people influencing the current "leader of our nation" - but perhaps we can at least let the rest of the world know that we are concerned, we do care, and we want to help.
