Kudos to IHOPFor the most part, we are camping. For us, this means lots of raw fruit and veggies. Which is a good thing. Now and then, we are in town and feeling flush and spring for a real meal in a restaurant. This weekend in Roswell, NM was one of those occassions. What a pleasent surprise it was to walk into an IHOP, with rather low expectations, and find not one, but THREE vegan entrees to choose from right on the menu. The first was a breakfast item, a three egg omlet made with "egg beater". I admit, being an ovo-lacto vegetarian myself - I had this with real eggs. Not to mention pancakes. The next item was listed on the menu as a Boca Cheeseburger. I happen to love Boca burgers, and as it happened we were spending the night in Roswell anyway - so I returned to have the Boca Cheeseburger for lunch the next day. It came without cheese and without mayo. I've already admitted my infirmity relating to dairy, right? So I sent it back for cheese and mayo. The poor waitress had to argue wiht the chef, but she got it for me. The last item was a black bean chili that sounded delicious and was under $3.00 for a bowl. However, we decided to move on, and I didn't get to try it. When I ordered the Boca burger, the waitress told me it had been on the menu for six months, and I was the first to order it! In which case, extra kudos to the chef, for it was properly prepared and delicious. (I've had problems in other food places with the cook having no clue how to actually prepare the vegetarian items on the menu and doing it rather badly). We're back on the road and back to granola bars, apples, and grapes for a few days. Okay - we did heat up a can of Bush's Vegetarian Baked Beans last night - but we're sharing a very small tent...
