Camp Dal



  • 2 cups Dal

  • 2 cups Rice

  • 1 Onion, sliced thin

  • 1 dried red pepper

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon kalonji

  • 4 cups water


I cooked this on a grill in camp in one medium sized saucepan!


First I put a little water in the pan and used it to sautee the onions, kalonji, red pepper, and garlic until the onion was translucent. Then I added the water and Dal and put a lid on the pot, allowing it to simmer for about an hour. Next I added the rice, replaced the lid and let it all simmer together, with occasional stirring to make sure it wasn’t sticking, for about another hour. Of course, cooking time will vary depending on how hot your fire is. Camp cooking is still a learning experience for us! This took quite a while to cook, but then it isn’t as if we are rushing off to work these days!
