I am not a strict vegan, as you probably know if you read here. I have always been ovo-lacto vegetarian, although I feel a lot better about that since I now have my own beloved and spoiled little hens laying eggs for me. Next year I may even add milk from my own goats. As it is, I've cut back my diary purchases to a minimum. The vegan, or even vegetarian diet, is not the best diet for every one. I firmly believe we all have different dietary needs. Our bodies are different - no one diet is perfect for everyone.
I'd like to share an excellent article with you today from one of my few "favorite" doctors - Dr. Ben Kim - regarding the strict vegan diet. In it he discusses his own four years of being a strict vegan, and what he feels he learned from that.
More Thoughts on Earthlings Documentary, including Potential Problems with a strict Vegan diet
Now, I'm not saying that everyone and anyone who goes on a strict Vegan diet will have problems with it. But it is something to think about. In particular, notice that when Dr.Kim started inquiring of those who he was emulating - he discovered that they also supplemented their "vegan" diet with some selected animal products.
In particular, I believe that B12 affects even more than we believe it does. In my case, a lack of it seems to affect not only my sexual health (as in a hormonal way), but my mental and emotional health as well as (most obviously) my energy level. Since eggs are a great source of B12, the fact that I can easily have an average of one guilt free egg a day (the hens lay three or four a day - I'm saying average as in I eat 2 or 3 one day, none the next, etc.) contributes in a very positive way to my health.
If you are vegan and find yourself depressed, or without energy, or just sort of "out of it" - please read Dr. Kim's article and consider how you could allow yourself a little leeway for the sake of your own good health. If it doesn't help - then maybe there is another cause - but it hurts nothing to try.
